Mobile apply

Definition

Applying for a job from a phone. For lots of roles, the phone is where people first see your job, so if the application doesn't work there, it doesn't really work.

Mobile apply is simply whether someone can go from seeing your job to sending an application, all on their phone, without it being a pain. And the reality is that many people see vacancies on their phone, in a feed, on a break, in bed, on the train. Very few of them are going to save it and remember to apply later on their laptop.

So a lot of things that seem normal on desktop break on mobile. A CV upload when your CV is on your laptop. Tiny form fields. A login screen. A page that takes forever to load. A wall of text where the salary is somewhere in paragraph six. Each one is a reason to close the tab.

A good mobile apply flow is short, lets people apply without a CV, or with a LinkedIn profile or just a few basic details, and shows the important stuff above the fold. The easiest way to check yours is to open your own ad on your phone and try it, with a timer.

Example

A care organization sees plenty of clicks on its ads but very few finished applications. When they test on a phone, the form requires a CV upload as the first step. Most nurses in their audience are seeing the ad on their phone during a shift and don't have a CV file on it. They make the CV optional and ask for name, phone number and one question instead. Finished applications go up right away.
